Summary/Abstract: The article describes a failed attempt at creating a firmer sub-national ethnic community within Croatian society. This process is studied in a sub-group of the ethnic Croatian population which in the early 1990s migrated from the province of Voivodina (Serbia) and settled in Croatia. The paper traces the efforts by leaders of the migrants to incorporate the newly settled population into a separate sub-national group. As is shown by the activities, the programmes, and various documents and publications of the migrants’ association, and by interviews with its leading members, this development was affected by social and political processes in the broader Croatian society.
