Summary/Abstract: The article presents the current development of the Bulgarian language and reveils some negative phenomena in its use. There is a comprehensive program to curb these phenomena, which includes the activity of linguists, teachers, the public and media. The role of institutions such as the Institute for Bulgarian Language and the Ministry of Education and Science in the process of enhancing the linguistic culture and language competence of all Bulgarians is emphasized.
