Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses, along with viewing literature as a medium of remembrance and a place of remembrance encounter, and through a literary text serving as a guardian of collective remembrance and its individual instances subsequently transposed into their collective counterpart, how the past is expressed in literary terms through the use of virtual narrative as a way of expressing a retrospective interpretation of events, by which the logic of virtual narrative is based upon substitution and dislocation. The counter narrative exists at the level of the story and functions as a parallel, unrealised alternative, in opposition to the actual, realised one. With regard to the corpus explored, this paper is based on the novels of Serbian-speaking writers featuring the topic of hardships and exodus of the Serbs at the end of the 20th century – Jovan Radulović (From St Mary to St Mary Magdalene and Life Past) and Anđelko Anušić (The Lost Souls Address Book and Voices from the Border)
