Summary/Abstract: Academician Hamdija Kreševljaković belongs among the most important intellectuals of Bosnia and Herzegovina. His life and his path in science was extremely interesting and intense. Throughout his life, he has learnt from everyone he knew and appreciated. Through persistent work, he gained a lot of knowledge, which, as an outstanding pedagogue and scientist, was best transmitted to all who were interested in the past of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Ottoman period. He is one of the few scientists of his time who educated a generation of students, many of whom, following the example of their teacher (professor), have become famous scientists themselves. Academic Kreševljaković was graced with humanity. Not only in education and science, but also in everyday life, he has provided assistance to everyone, within the limits of material possibilities, careful that it is not widely known. One of the professor’s passions was travelling through Bosnia and Herzegovina, the region, but also to several European countries. In the circle of historians of the Ottoman period, he appears from the first decades of the 20th century. In addition to archival research and consulting of professional literature, he was writing down everything he heard from others and used it in science, and he never hide who, when and where helped him with these documents, translations or tales. He regularly listed the names of all who helped him in the scientific work. He wrote daily on the history of the Ottoman period of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The result of 55 years of scientific work is a number of significant studies, articles, contributions and reviews. His scientific work counts a total of 346 bibliographic units. I have proved in my work that this number is far greater than the above. Among the numerous works, the most important works are: Guilds and crafts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Captaincies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo in the time of Austro-Hungarian Administration (1878-1918), and many other books and works. These works are also an inevitable reading in getting to know the past of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Ottoman period. Because of all the merit in the field of science, in 1939, Professor Kreševljaković was elected as the first Bosniak in the Yugoslav Academy of Science and Art. When the Scientific Society of People’s Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded in 1951, the precursor of today’s ANU BiH (Academy of Science and Arts), academic Hamdija Kreševljaković was among the first 18 members. What great reputation among his colleagues he already had at that time shows in the fact that in the first convening of the Scientific Society he was elected its first vice-president. The respect he received in his life continued after his death. Similarly today, with reverence , it is being spoken and written about the academic Hamdija Kreševljaković and his scientific works.
