Summary/Abstract: In 1973, immediately after Alba de Cespedes’ permanent move to Paris, the Seuil publishing house releases Sans autre lieu que la nuit, a novel written in French. A couple of years later, its Italian translation is published by the Mondadori house, under the title of Nel buio della notte. This novel differs significantly form the rest of De Cespedes’ oeuvre; it is intertwined with long and complex reflective passages on the value of literature in the wake of crisis that struck the novelistic genre, as well as the humanities on the whole, in the sixties and seventies of the 20th century. Taking numerous archival audio-visual documents as a point of departure, the paper deals with the language and poetics of the novel, focusing primarily on the choice of French as the language of preference. In addition, the paper deals with the political and cultural engagement of the author in the period designated, in which she advocates for the defence of writers and the role of literature in contemporary society.
