Summary/Abstract: What factors have impaired Schubert’s reputation and what developments in musicology in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have brought about changes in attitude about the composer’s true significance? Schubert’s unconventional approach to harmony, modulation and form led to inappropriate comparisons with Beethoven that are now being challenged. Does modern musical scholarship offer ‘fairer hopes’ for Schubert studies?
