Summary/Abstract: The present study is an account of the multiple possibilities offered by the use of idiomatic expressions, proverbs and collocations in the teaching of Japanese as a foreign language. The importance of collocations has been recently stressed in the teaching and learning to express oneself correctly in a foreign language. As for the importance of idiomatic expressions, their connection to metaphor gives ample possibilities for study, both at a theoretical level and as a practical way of understanding a language and a people. We point out some of the theoretical and many practical, applicative possibilities that collocations, idiomatic expressions and proverbs offer in teaching a language like Japanese.
