Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the mass migration of Bulgarians to Bessarabia after the Russo-Turkish Wars at the end 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. The research covers the territory around Sliven and Kotel. It is based on documents including memoirs of the migrants, of their contemporaries who stayed back at their native places, as well as files of the Headquarters of the Danube Russian Army of 1826-1829. In the study are included also the historic situation, the concrete circumstances and the reasons for the migration of big groups of the population which after the Edirne Peace Treaty had faced the alternative between terror and refuge abroad. The paper contains also statistical data for the number of the migrants and the places from where they had left for Bessarabia. The migration is characterized as an economic, social and demographic shock with a strong influence on the development of the whole region.
