Summary/Abstract: The acoustic system pervades the realm of human existence and, in relation to it, the outer world. This papers discusses the ways in which an auditory image is realised in the artistic world of Chekhov’s novellas, and by which auditory details the author creates this or that image in his oeuvre. Each novella, due to a scope of certain auditory details, is provided with its own emotional background, and generates a certain atmosphere or directly reflects the hero’s mental state. Auditory images are comprised of various auditory details, such as natural sounds, mechanical sounds, pieces of music, and ‘sounds’ of silence. Owing to this phenomenon, the reader gets a necessary insight into the multi-faced and complex events described in Chekhov’s oeuvre.
