Mutism – one of the research areas of applied linguistics

Summary/Abstract: The article defines mutism, which is one of the areas of applied linguistics researches. Within mutism the following phenomena were placed: selective mutism, staying silent, pause. The article contains their characteristics, as well as the original definition of “mutism”, which is, on the one hand, a necessary condition for the occurrence of the utterance and its proper reception, on the other the manifestation of linguistic communication disorders or other communication problems.
