Summary/Abstract: For several decades the shadow of the war and occupation, of endless victims, tragedy, and suffering, fell across Polish-German relations. We were divided by the iron curtain. Thus the new chapter in our relations that opened in 1989 has not been an easy one. It required vision and courage to overcome the fatalism of enmity, injury, and prejudice. Bold thinking and a new approach were reflected in the Polish bishops’ historic letter of 1965, the attitude of the Lutheran Church in Germany, and the memorable visit of Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt to Warsaw, where, before the statue to the Heroes of the Ghetto Uprising, he offered homage to the victims of Nazi crimes.
