Summary/Abstract: This work is reconstruction of basic ethnic, regional, individual and social structures of western mercenaries in Byzantium during Comnenian epoch (1081-1185). It deals primarely with mercenaries from Italy, France and Germany. The work is based on byzantine and western sources. Italian Normans and French occur togeher reletively often under term Φράγγοι, mostly during the reign of Alexius I, but much rarely than in previous epoch. German mercenaries occur greatly during the reign of Manuel I. Lombard mercenaries are found in Comnenian service mostly durnig Manuel`s italian wars. Among the individual mercenaries, the work deals with the careers of several prominent ones: Constantine Humbertopulos, Rogerius, Roger, Guy Hauteville of Amalfi, Pietro of Aliffa. The work also tries to identify which social groups most possibly were present among the latin mercenaries of Comnenian epoch: younger sons of lesser nobility, egziled members of middleand higher nobility, nobility from rural background of great Italian cities, ministerials, serjeants.
