Experimental stud y of the content of the concept “dance ” and “танец” in Russian and English

Summary/Abstract: We report an analysis of the content of the concept “dance” in Russian and English, based on the results of an experimental study carried out using the method of subjective definitions and the scaling method. The real meaning of the concept of “dance” in the consciousness of English and Russian native speakers is revealed, which makes it possible to understand how accurately it correlates with the definition of the word “dance” in explanatory dictionaries. It is shown that psycholinguistic methods allow the semantic description of lexical units to be significantly supplemented. The methods used in the paper make it possible to identify the core and the near periphery of the concept “dance”, as well as uncommon characteristics in English and Russian.
