The history of Polish Sociology (1860–1939) in the Mirror of Bibliometrics (an attempt to verify the method)

Summary/Abstract: This article has two aims. One is to present the history of Polish Sociology 1860–1939, and the other is to estimate the cognitive value of bibliometrics in presenting a history of the discipline. In order to do so, (1) a citation index was built on a base of published sociological books in that period (2) the development of sociological writing in Poland was traced and compared with a number of foreign sociological books which were translated into the Polish language. These procedures enabled the process of individualisation in the field of Polish Sociology in the years 1918–1939 to be presented, with particular emphasis being given to the ties between Polish and world Sociology. Bibliometrics appears to have a crucial cognitive value and allows the history of the discipline to be supported with vital facts.
