Summary/Abstract: The article discusses developments in the interaction between the imperial state structures with the peoples and political entities of the North Caucasus in the late 18th and 20th centuries, in the context of the concept of a "frontier." It is concluded that modern Russian historiography views this not as a "conflict of civilizations", but as a sphere of interaction and mutual influence of various cultural complexes (border-contact zone).
