Summary/Abstract: This study is an attempt at conceptualizing the various frame ofthought of philosophers working in the historical reason tradition. On its applicativeside, it brings to light Bernard Williams’ “idea of liberty” to illustrate how historypermeates our reasoning as an analytically critical method. We follow a two-stepexamination consisting of an introduction to the framework of thinking about a socialvalue, the idea of liberty, and a discussion of the implication of adopting it ineconomics and social sciences, in general. The discussion opens up novel vistas forrethinking social science on an epistemological platform grounded on historical reason.
