Summary/Abstract: The perception of the light, as it can be found in Orthodox theology, has its roots in the Old Testament and also in the writings of the holy fathers, beginning with Pseudo-Dionisie the Areopagite, and it is continued by hesychasts, afterwards being transposed into painting and iconography. The central idea that lies deep within the core of philosophy and of the theology of light is that God is Light, a light that is reflected into matter, growing to be depicted in Byzantine painting. Thus, in Byzantine art, the conception of light becomes the soul of its aesthetics.
