Summary/Abstract: The emergence of the Republic of Turkey as a great power has been followed by attempts to restore the mission of the former Ottoman Empire (neoosmanism). Component parts of that process are the (re)Islamization of society and renunciation of the secular Kemalistic traditions, which is – along with the unresolved Kurdish issue – incompatible with the projected position of the leader of South East Europe. Besides the primary support of the USA, mainly in autonomous creating of Turkish foreign policy, Russia appears to be its most important economy partner.
