ON THE MEANING OF THE NOTION OF PROBABILITY

Summary/Abstract: In the ancient times and in the Middle Ages the word “probability” was used as a dialectical or rethorical concept. The Greek philosopher Karneades used this word as a cornerstone of his doctrine known as the science of the “pithanon”. In the XVI century this notion played a central role in the doctrine of probabilism created by Jesuits. Starting from the famous work written by J. Bernoulli, the word probability becomes the scientific term of various theories of uncertainty. In this paper we sketch the history of the notion of probabili-ty from ancient times till the XVIII century.
