Summary/Abstract: There is a general agreement that research into doctor-patient interaction is a much-needed discipline. Both linguists and medical specialists have provided deep and long-term analyses of medical consultations. However, several aspects of medical interviewing, for example the manifestation of politeness, have so far received little attention. The present contribution attempts to investigate linguistic devices that are characteristic of negatively polite behaviour. It also presents a comparative analysis of doctor-patient interviews in different medical environments.
