Summary/Abstract: Russian critics have different opinions about Viktor Erofeev’s prose, probably one of the most controversial writers of the twentieth century. His ironical tone and the shockingly violent scenes have generated numberless opinions, most of which negative. In the following article we accomplished a study on the main techniques used by the writer to describe the metamorphoses of the Russian social archetypes. In order to illustrate the new Russians, Viktor Erofeev uses Freudian precepts, especially in analysing the human subconscious mind, where all the negative and even sadist tendencies lie. Clearly breaking with the traditional and Soviet literature, to which the author declares war, Vik.Erofeev discusses the negative traits of the Russian character deeply embedded in the contradictions which determine the Russian spirit. Throughout the centuries, according to the author, these negative tendencies and contradictions have increased, culminating with a monstrous type, whose atrocities are stressed out by the Communist experiment.
