Summary/Abstract: The article includes two sections. In the first, there are reviewed the Western and Russian literature on ancient Greek graffiti on the table vases, separately from Greece and from the North Pontic Area; shortly from the first publications in “Corpus inscriptionum Graecarum” up to our days. In the second section, there are investigated some main methodological questions of studying the graffiti. The author proclaim immediate dependence between the place of graffito on vase and its genre. The votive inscriptions, some temple marks and table drinking texts find place on the open parts of the vases (the exceptions are rare). The most widespread class of graffiti on vases is the abbreviations of owner’s names on the vessels bottom, the full names are rare. There is frequent mistake in literature: such abbreviations as “АП”, “АПОΛ”, “НР”, “НРА”, “ΔΗ”, “ΔΗΜ” and simile on the vessels bottom are suggested as votives to the gods with abbreviated their names (Apollo, Hera, Demeter and so on). But the multiple examples from different sanctuaries of Greece and the North Pontic area show their real typology: they are inscriptions of the owners with shortened theophoric names.
