Summary/Abstract: Deferred taxes represent income tax amounts, payable or refundable in future accounting periods, which usually derive from temporary differences between certain calculations in book and tax purposes. In balance sheet, they are presented as deferred tax assets or deferred tax liabilities, while in income statement they are presented as deferred tax expenditure or deferred tax revenue. In this paper, theoretical analysis of deferred taxes’ occurrence and auditing has been conducted. In addition, empirical research about materiality and structure of deferred taxes in financial statements of Serbian companies, during 2014 and 2015, has been conducted. On a sample of 200 companies, it is found that deferred taxes are not materially significant accounting category in average Serbian company. On the other hand, it is found that differences between calculation of amortization in book and tax purposes represent the main source of deferred taxes’ occurrence.
