Some Linguistic Features of Riddles and Proverbs

Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the functional features of riddles and proverbs. The author aims to show how these features relate to their linguistic characteristics. It is argued that in proverbs the words are used in their literal meaning while the whole proverb is used figuratively. The use of rhyme is also more typical of proverbs than of riddles. On the other hand, riddles represent a more suitable framework for the creation of new words. Words with unknown meanings are never used in proverbs but are quite common in riddles. In both proverbs and riddles it is possible to find words whose use is highly restricted to the context of one particular riddle or proverb.
