Summary/Abstract: The first part of Mr. Leu's article sees history as part of memory as a whole, trying to draw the attention of the reader upon the reactions of the rural Banat to historical change. Writing (side-notes, inscriptions, comments) became essential in retracing historical chronology in the mid-18th century, when the great educational reforms took place. Original documents are quoted in order to emphasise the importance of this phenomenon. The second part of the article quotes further writings (on the events in 1788 and the fall of Napoleon), analysing the (subjective) perspective of the local author as to the clash of cultures and national identities. The manuscripts establish a connection between any geographical space and the collective memory of its people. While TIME undergoes a process of perpetual change, it is SPACE which offers stability and a sense of security. Both concepts are present in the manuscripts from the Banat villages that the article focuses on.
