The Council of Europe Conventions on the Protection of Human Rights

Summary/Abstract: The Statute of the Council of Europe, signed in 1949. declared the protection of human rights as the condition of membership in the Council (art. 3 and 4). and one of the first activities of the Council's organs was the drafting of the European Convention on Human Rights. The West European states, whose basic political, economic, social and legal characteristics are equal, stipulated the protection of those rights of the individual which are in the foundations of the structure of their societies.
