Summary/Abstract: One of the advantages of being a diplomat is getting to know other countries. In Bucharest, that includes developing an understanding of the history and culture of Romanian society, and seeking to learn the language of the Romanian people, their political system and power structures. It also involves seeking to establish what previous links may have existed between the Republic of Ireland and Romania. For someone who graduated in history and geography, this is one of the more fascinating research topics. This article is an account of some of the cultural, political and economic links between Ireland and European countries documented in chronicles, history books, travel literature,non-fiction works and the media.
