János Szerencsi's two visits at György Zoványi in Zilah

Summary/Abstract: György Zoványi was elected bishop of the Transtibiscan Reformed Church District be-tween 1728 and 1758 and also dean in the Deanery of Szilágy. He administered the district from the town of Zilah. According to the public opinion, the bishops of the Transtibiscan district had always been hard-handed governors of the church, but Zoványi assigned the right tothe deans to perform ordination and deal with divorces and disciplinary matters. However, appeals to Zoványi were allowed. Such an appeal was that of János Szerencsi, deprived of his position and job. It is clear from the documents how little influence the bishop had over administrative matters of the church, albeit one may acknowledge his human compassion.
