Summary/Abstract: Acquiring of archival material is one of the basic tasks of an archive. Archives in Bosnia and Herzegovina are scarce in the material storage space. In order to save and preserve the material, archives have been in the past decades acquiring records that were not selected, extracted, and arranged. In this way, the space for the storage of records has been irrationally used. Today, the demands of creators and holders of records are increasing, and archives are not able to abide by their basic legal obligation to take over records from creators due to lack of space. The paper will deal with regulations that deal with the acquisition of archival material and their application in practice. We will attempt to provide suggestions that could resolve the problem.
