Summary/Abstract: An interesting and noteworthy line of research in contemporary cognitive studies attempts to determine to what extent man’s ability to count depends on language. The paper provides an overview of several studies devoted to the problem in question. The presented results of research lead to the conclusion that human numerical competence is characterized by modularity and depends on the use of various types of interdependent information and mental representations (both linguistic and nonlinguistic ones). This intuition is best expressed in the model proposed by Dehaene (1992).
