Summary/Abstract: The article presents on a synopsis of press reviews of Polish translations of Andriej Płatonow’s works which have appeared thus far on the Polish book market. The analysis of the reviews leads to the conclusion that the most frequent reviewers were Rene Śliwowski (the greatest promoter of Płatonow in Poland), Andrzej Drawicz and Florian Nieuważny. From 1965, when the first reviews appeared, until 1999 more than over 50 reviews of Płatonow’s 10 collections were published in Polish journals. The works were appreciated first of all for their humanism, the penetrating psychologism of characters, tragicalness touched with satire and the grotesque, condemnation of the bureaucracy and totalitarianisms and the presence of the motives of love, death, home and homelessness, childhood, orphanhood and loneliness and closely connected with them motives of the road, space, time and history. The reviewers paid attention to the author’s style and language which was permeated with communist newspeak, but at the same time with biblical and mythological metaphors and their masterly translations. Most often, however, the reviewers called attention to the singularity and, comparative attempts notwithstanding to the originality of Płatonow’s writing.
