Otherness in All Its Diversity: Registers, Logics, Figures

Summary/Abstract: This article aims to distinguish between several registers of otherness: mineral, plant, animal and human. The human being is not only defined in relation to a society, but also more generally in relation to a natural environment, a geographical environment; that is why four registers of otherness are studied here. Two logics of otherness can intervene: binary otherness and the otherness of the boundary. Moreover, otherness can only be seen through figures. Four of them linked to the imaginary of the desert are examined – emptiness, the Nomad, the Anchorite, the Oasis – in several writings of the following authors: Pierre Loti, Isabelle Eberhardt, and Andrée Chedid.
