Summary/Abstract: The article presents some opinions concerning the image of the intellectually disabled created by the media these days. Television, the Internet and newspapers have a vital function – they create opinions on certain topics. The opinion-forming function of the media sometimes causes misunderstandings, because what is presented to the viewers is not always true. Due to the lack of self-relfection people do not have a critical view on the certain topic. Two groups of students from Cracow took part in the research – 41 of whom are studying special education and 44 represent a non-pedagogical field. Their task was to decide how much they agree with sentences connected to stereotypes of disability presented in the media, their personal bond with an intellectually disabled person and movies or TV series that they know which show an image of those mentally challenged. Additionaly, the students were asked to say why in their opinion the disabled are presented in the media and when most often. Last but not least they were asked whether they believe that presenting mental disability in the media lets the viewers better understand it and feel more comfortable with it. The subjects told about how they feel while watching a TV series, movie or TV programme in which an intellectually disabled person appears.
