Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present Martha Nussbaum’s theory of human capabilities against the background of the issue of autonomy of the disabled. At the beginning, three components of ethical autonomy are described. Next, the difference between procedural definitions of autonomy and its definitions whose content is supplemented with a reference to a particular system of norms or values is explained. Then, rudiments of Nussbaum’s approach and their implications for the issue of autonomy of the disabled are presented. Finally, a substantial problem posed by the Nussbaum’s approach to the issue of autonomy of the disabled is pointed to. It is explained that the problem is typical for every attempt aimed at supplementing the procedural understanding of autonomy with a reference to a particular system of values.
