Summary/Abstract: The present research is based on the hypothesis that, while the representations of the African city of Timbuktu are built in time, on different layers, always dwelling on the question of Otherness, they never become a representation of the complete Other. Timbuktu remains a remote Other across the 19th century, but it remains somehow connected to its own model in a century of geographical discoveries. The city is both close and afar, belonging to remote geographies but always-already likely to be appropriated. In between these two extremes ranges the history of the real city.
