Summary/Abstract: “Rocznik Orientalistyczny” was founded in 1914 from the initiative of Jan Grzegorzewski. Invited to contribute to the enterprise were prominent Polish and Russian orientalists. The outbreak of World War I significantly hindered the work on the first volume as financial problems combined with communication difficulties between the editing board and the authors. At the same time, an internal conflict intensified between Jan Grzegorzewski and the other editors, Andrzej Gawroński in particular. Despite these complications, the first volume of the journal was successfully published in two parts: the first one in 1915, and the second one in 1918. The history of “Rocznik Orientalistyczny” has been reconstructed based mostly on archival materials, the correspondence between the linguistis, which have not been used much until now.
