Summary/Abstract: In discussions on verbal violence, i.e., on verbal discrimination, the question often arises whether the negative evalutation is incorporated into the language system itself, or whether it is realized in usage, i.e., in (the course of) a concrete speech act. This problem can be represented as a dichotomy of two approaches, the semantic and the pragmatic one. A semantic description regards language primarily as a cognitive, abstract, structure-related phenomenon and defines the evaluation as a context-independent component of the word meaning, which is integrated into the language system. The pragmatically oriented view perceives the language first and foremost as socially determined and directed to communication or interaction. Using the example of verbal discrimination as possible expression of verbal violence, the above-mentioned question will be dealt with in more detail in this paper. The basis of the analysis are pejoratives used to address people, i.e., lexical units of the negative evaluative type.
