Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the chronotope and the genre of Gogol’s The Old World Landowners. The story has two different spaces. The limited microcosm of the old owners and the vast and indefinite space of the outside world. The boundary between these two different spaces is very clear. Every phenomenon is evaluated from the point of view of its location on "this" or "that" side of the border. The closure, the isolation and the habit make the property of the Gogolian couple only superficially idyllic. Their whole life is an infinite repetition and every innovation from the outside brings decadence and death.
