Translating Address Pronouns from European Portuguese into Romanian: The Case of ”You”

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to presente the hybrid nature of the address pronoun ”você” in European Portuguese, the challenges of grasping all its discoursive values and then translating them into Romanian. For this analysis we used a corpus of four novels written by José Saramago and their translations into Romanian. Although ”você” is formally a pronoun with intermediate value of politeness, its semantic and pragmatic values are more complex, ranging from the low degree of politeness of a typical T pronoun, to the high level of deference of a ”V” pronoun, according to diachronic, diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic factors. The multiple translations of ”você” proposed in this corpus account for the hibridity and the complexity of this pronoun and show how a good translation is able to render in the target language all the visible and the invisible, but not less important meanings of the source term.
