Summary/Abstract: Popeye the Sailor, one of the most significant and popular heros of cartoons, appeared in a newspaper comic of Elzie Segar for the first time on January 17th 1929. He needed only five years to reach the fame of Mickey Mouse and became the most popular character in the world of animation. The story of Popeye the Sailor was in a way completed with Robert Altman’s movie forty years later. It was made in Popeye’s honour. But, the detail that makes this Popeye saga consisting of several hundred films especially interesting is a huge variety of ideas and topics on which it has been built.
