Summary/Abstract: This paper intends to depict videogame localization as a telling example of negotiation between inventive freedom and limiting factors; in short, as an instance of “scientific poetry”. Videogame localization is a highly specialized form of translation practice that proposes an unconventional type of equivalence, while offering unprecedented creative liberty for translators. Since the balance between the technical and personal competencies of the localizer is frail and fluctuant, understanding and recognising the principles of this type of specialised translation is crucial. In this sense, academic research is needed to devise effective up-to-date training programs, for future professionals to bring quality translations at gamers' fingertips worldwide.
