Summary/Abstract: On the premise that social work has never occupied exclusive or privileged position within social professions, the paper discusses the question of contemporary social status of social work profession. The framework for the analysis constitutes Beck’s theory of risk society whereby the author identifies three different levels of risk within social work profession; risks of social wotk profession in relation to other helping professions/sciences; -risks in the relationship social worker-service user and risks in relation to the social role of social work. In her concluding remarks the author suggests that the (re)positioning of social work profession in the future will depend upon the answer to the question whether the society will be based exclusively on the neoliberal premises which emphasize individual responsability and hereby assigne to social work only a secondary, less important role or social work will successfully (re)affirmate itsself as a profession of human rights and social justice.
