Summary/Abstract: This article deals with questioning the political and cultural modernization in the light of thematization of identity. It deals with the key points of the two dimensions of modernization, trying to point out the importance of identity changes in this context. It is obvious that in recent theoretical analysis of modernization political and cultural components of identity construction are always taken into consideration, as they have a great impact on the character and reach of the modernization processes. In context of modernisation since 1960s up to date appeared phenomena of new social movements and their angagement in shaping individual and social identities. The globalization reflexes on social movements have been studied and the conclusions on the presence and impact of identity question have been made. It is shown that globalization and transition reinforced the importance of the identity question. Understending of the contemporary social sciences and modernization in general, as well as its globalization circle and transition forms, cannot be properly understood if the crucial question of identity is not taken into consideration.
