Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the role of the media, namely TV news, the process of defining criminality as one of the risks of contemporary society and the potential of media representation of criminality in legitimizing the appropriate ways of managing these risks.The paper presents the results of the media analysis of crime and criminal sanctions in television news reports. The influence of media representation of crime and its punishment on the public, influence on attitudes, behavior and fears of crime is also discussed.
