Summary/Abstract: Assimilated Jews believed that ethical Judaism should contribute to strengthening the integration of Jews in Bohemian society. However, in the course of the cultural transformation of Judaism in Prague and Bohemia, as Czech-German nationalism advanced, the idea of an independent Jewish consciousness, separate from the Czech and German nationalist camps, gained ground. With the perceived ‘betrayal’ of liberalism, a new generation of Jewish intellectuals began to embrace Zionism, which was spreading from Vienna and Berlin, and which began to strongly influence the cultural life of Prague during this period.
