Summary/Abstract: The article aims to reveal how Eduardas Volteris interpreted ethnographical concepts of the Russian Imperial Geographical Society and the Lithuanian Science Society through his idea of ethnographical-statistical studies. The Russian Imperial Geographical Society developed ethnographical-statistical studies in order to determine the ’tribal’ composition of the population. The theory distinctively integrated the concepts of the ’history of ideas’, observation methods, spreading in the Western ethnography, and ’ethnographical statistics’. Participating in the activities of the Lithuanian Science Society, Eduardas Volteris raised the discourses of ’the soul of a nation’, etc., in ethnographical-statistical studies. The holistic rhetoric of this idea is analysed from a theoretical point of view. Attention is concentrated on the following topics: ethnographical statistics, ethnographical-statistical studies of Lithuania; and the idea of ethnographical statistics in the Russian Empire and in Europe.
