Summary/Abstract: In Lithuania, as well as in Central and Eastern Europe, the active pursuit of the intelligentsia as a separate group of society continues. This article attempts to find out how the Lithuanian intelligentsia used public discourse in the formation of group identity at the end of the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the 20th. Based on discursive practices, the intelligentsia sought to define itself as a separate group of society, to determine its place and role in a modern society. The aim of the article is to identify the discursive strategies by which the Lithuanian intelligentsia of that time sought to support their individual and collective self-awareness. The concept of public discourse is used for practical reasons and is defined through the principles of selection for used sources. These sources are written texts intended for the general public and for the public-press publications. It is assumed that the intelligentsia used this kind of literature as a tool for the development of a group of people and a self-image.
