Summary/Abstract: Contribution is aimed on highlighting the disinformation in online environment. It describes online communication as a new form of social communication as well as online environment which contains various information sources. It deals with using a term “fake news” and distinguishes between disinformation, misinformation and mal-information. It describes why people tend to believe disinformation with the context of post-truth era when believing information is based more on emotions, feelings and beliefs rather than on objective facts. It shows the results of the research Media Literacy Index 2018 which represent 35 European countries and the tendency of their citizens to believe disinformation which is closely connected with level of media literacy in the country. The contribution presents media literacy as an effective tool which can be used in detecting and combating disinformation.
