Summary/Abstract: The only extant non-religious Pahlavi book is the short treatise of the Sasanian nobility entitled Xusraw i Kawadan ud redag-e, which is uniquely valuable for its information on the categories of Sasanian court life. This book remained in high repute long into the Islamic period, and Tha c alibi incorporated a summary of its contents in his Arabic Ghurar in early 11th century. During the early Islamic centuries, numerous Pahlavi books were reproduced in Arabic translations, which like the originals are nearly all lost; but information of their existence has come down to us in surviving Arabic works. The present article aims at throwing light on a hitherto neglected part of this Pahlavi text, i.e. the list of various dishes served in the late antique Sasanian court. The rich and somewhat extravagant and lavish species represent an elite cuisine which is deeply rooted in Sasanian culture and had a significant influence on the development of later Iranian culinary culture from the Abbasid period up to modern times.
