Summary/Abstract: Review: Kanon i obrzeża [‘The Canon and Its Peripheries’], ed. by I. Iwasiów, T. Czerska, Wydawnictwo Universitas, Kraków 2005. Benefits are shared as derived from the reading of the multi-author volume under review. The book is an inspiring instance of re-reading of both title categories on their meta-meaning level. Proposed ways are discussed of how to functionalise these categories for purposes of today’s literary (and not only literary) studies dealing with issues of primary categories, understanding of hierarchies, authorities, norms/standards, symbolic community, sense of subject’s identity, tradition with its imaginaries. The recognitions contained in this volume imply that the canon gains traits of a process, flow, something open-ended, flexible, and subject to contextualisation. It still poses a challenge, though, if one were to seek the directions of this movement of meanings, rules of value constituting, criteria of moving up/down the hierarchy ladder.
